Clarke Buehling et Gérard De Smaele
FR// Le concert de Clarke Buehling sera précédé de la diffusion du film de Patrick Ferryn et de Gérard De Smaele, « A Banjo Frolic », présenté, animé et commenté en live par ce dernier (musicien et notre plus sûr expert belge en banjo), qui nous contera l’origine et l’histoire du banjo.
Dans la tête de Gérard De Smaele tourne le train épicycloïdal qui a inspiré Henry Sturmey et James Archer. À l’intérieur de son univers, les satellites sont un banjo à cinq cordes, la restauration d’œuvres d’art sur papier, et la bicyclette : des activités qu’il pratique depuis des décennies et sur lesquelles il a publié de nombreux livres et articles. Aux yeux de certains, la coordination de ces domaines apparemment incompatibles pourrait sembler impossible, voire suspecte, mais pour lui, c’est un regard sur le monde, une manière intérieure de sagesse et de liberté d’esprit.

In het hoofd van Gérard De Smaele draait de epicycloïdale trein die Henry Sturmey en James Archer inspireerde. Binnen zijn universum zijn de satellieten een vijfsnarige banjo, de restauratie van kunstwerken op papier en fietsen: activiteiten die hij al jaren beoefent en waarover hij al vele boeken en artikels heeft gepubliceerd. In de ogen van sommigen is het samengaan van deze, ogenschijnlijk onverenigbare, activiteiten onmogelijk en zelfs verdacht. Maar voor hem is het een blik op de wereld, een innerlijke weg naar wijsheid en vrijheid van geest.

In the mind of Gérard De Smaele, the epicycloidal train that inspired Henry Sturmey and James Archer is spinning. Within his universe, the satellites are a five-string banjo, the restoration of works of art on paper and bicycles : activities that he has been practising for years and about which he has already published many books and articles. Grâce à son jeu astucieux du banjo et à ses compositions luxuriantes, Kaïa s’inspire d’influence enracinées au Québec, dans les Caraïbes et dans les Appalaches, qui reflètent toutes la diversité de ses origines ; les liens profonds de sa famille avec la scène musicale folk canadienne ; ses années universitaires passées à s’imprégner de la musique des Appalaches en Virginie occidentale et l’expérience de son père qui a grandi à Grenade, aux Caraïbes, arrivant au Canada en 1986, après l’invasion américaine.

FR// Munis de leurs amplis sur le dos et revêtant des costumes dans le plus pur style steampunk, Folk Dandies ouvrira la soirée avant Kaia Kater, puis avant Rawhide, proposant un répertoire folk-rock itinérant avec des arrangements étonnants de thèmes aux allures bluegrass et celtiques.

FR// Rawhide devaient également jouer le jour de l’amitié, mais leur calendrier ne le permettait pas.
Rawhide entame sa 46e année d’existence et est réputé en Europe pour avoir repoussé les limites du bluesgrass vers d’autres styles de musique tels que le barbershop, la musique classique, le swing et la pop. Leurs concerts combinent une variété de musique instrumentale et vocale de bon goût avec beaucoup d’humour, à la fois pendant et entre les chansons. Un spectacle avec Rawhide est toujours spécial et différents de tout autre groupe de bluegrass. Avec Rawhide, vous pouvez vous attendre à l’inattendu
NL// Het was de bedoeling dat Rawhide ook op de dag van de vriendschap zou spelen maar hun agenda liet dat niet toe.
Rawhide gaat zijn 46ste jaar in en staat in heel Europa bekend om het verleggen van de grenzen van bluegrass naar andere muziekstijlen zoals barbershop, klassiek, swing en pop. Hun concerten combineren een verscheidenheid aan smaakvolle instrumentale en vocale muziek met veel humor, zowel tijdens als tussen de nummers door. Een show met Rawhide is altijd speciaal en anders dan die van andere bluegrassbands. Met Rawhide kun je het onverwachte verwachten.
ENG// Rawhide were also supposed to play on Friendship Day but their schedule did not allow for it.
Rawhide is going into it’s 46th year of existence and has been renowned in Europe for stretching the boundaries of bluegrass towards other styles of music such as barbershop, classical, swing and pop. Their live shows combine a variety of tasteful instrumental ans vocal music with lots of humour, both during and between the songs. A show with Rawhide is always special and different than with any other bluegrass band. With Rawhide you can expect the unexpected.

Carte Blanche pour Come Around The Banjo

FR// La musique connecte, les amoureux de certains styles se retrouvent toujours. Même au-delà de la frontière linguistique en Belgique !
Il s’agit ici de Patrick Ferryn et Arne Eekman qui ont été mis en contact il y a des années par la marraine de ce festival, Danny Adams. Sans plus attendre, ils se sont mis à parler banjo dans un français et un néerlandais approximatifs.
Arne, amateur de banjo, souhaite particulièrement réunir les amateurs de folk lors de jam sessions acoustiques informelles, et a ainsi lancé les week-ends « Come Around the Banjo » à Essen en 2016. Avec l’aide de son épouse Joor Verhoeven et d’une grande équipe de bénévoles, ces week-ends sont déjà devenus un événement bien connu dans le monde du banjo européen.
Au fil des années depuis la création de « Come Around the Banjo », de très belles amitiés se sont nouées.
Patrick souhaite surtout offrir une scène et un public aux artistes et rêve depuis longtemps d’un festival de banjo. Et notamment à un hommage à Derroll Adams. Il a trouvé des soutiens enthousiastes auprès de Sophie Devaert, Fred Clautier et toute l’équipe du Centre Culturel de Perwez.
« Come Around the Banjo » a été invité à collaborer et voilà, le premier Derroll Adams Banjoree est né !
Patrick et Fred ont très généreusement offert une « Carte Blanche » à Arne et Joor pour remplir tout le samedi du festival à Perwez avec leurs amis musiciens.

In dit geval zijn het Patrick Ferryn en Arne Eekman die jaren geleden door de meter van dit festival, Danny Adams, al met elkaar in contact waren gebracht. Al gauw waren die twee in gebroken Frans en gebroken Nederlands met elkaar aan het fezelen over banjo-evenementen.
Banjo-amateur Arne is vooral geïnteresseerd in het samenbrengen van folkliefhebbers in informele akoestische jamsessies en begon dus in 2016 met de “Come Around the Banjo”-weekenden in Essen. Door de hulp van zijn vrouw Joor Verhoeven en een grote ploeg vrijwilligers zijn deze weekenden al een klein begrip geworden in de Europese banjowereld.
In de jaren dat “Come Around the Banjo” bestaat zijn heel fijne vriendschappen ontstaan.
Patrick wil vooral artiesten een podium en een publiek geven en droomde allang over een banjofestival. En vooral over een hommage aan Derroll Adams. In Sophie Devaert, Fred Clautier en de hele ploeg van het cultureel centrum van Perwez vond hij enthousiaste medestanders.
De vraag werd gesteld aan Come Around the Banjo om samen te werken en voilà, de eerste Derroll Adams Banjoree werd geboren!
Heel gul gaven Patrick en Fred “Carte Blanche” aan Arne en Joor om de hele zaterdag van het festival in Perwez te vullen met hun muzikale vrienden.

ENG// Music connects, lovers of certain styles always find each other. Even in Belgium across the language border!
In this case, it’s Patrick Ferryn and Arne Eekman who had already been put in touch years ago by the godmother of this festival, Danny Adams. Soon the two were feuding with each other in broken French and broken Dutch about banjo events.
Banjo amateur Arne is particularly interested in bringing folk enthusiasts together in informal acoustic jam sessions, so he started the ‘Come Around the Banjo’ weekends in Essen in 2016. With the help of his wife Joor Verhoeven and a large team of volunteers, these weekends have already become a small household name in the European banjo world.
In the years that ‘Come Around the Banjo’ has existed, very fine friendships have been formed.
Patrick especially wants to give artists a stage and an audience and has long dreamt of a banjo festival. And especially about a tribute to Derroll Adams. He found enthusiastic supporters in Sophie Devaert, Fred Clautier and the whole team at the Perwez cultural centre.
The question was put to Come Around the Banjo to collaborate and voilà, the first Derroll Adams Banjoree was born!
Very generously, Patrick and Fred gave ‘Carte Blanche’ to Arne and Joor to fill the entire Saturday of the festival in Perwez with their musical friends.

FR// Ce groupe endiablé puise son inspiration dans diverses traditions musicales : folk irlandais, country à l’ancienne, gospel exubérant, bluegrass, americana ainsi qu’une touche de chant dialectal. Il interprète ses propres compositions aussi bien que des classiques du genre dans une polyphonie étonnante.

FR// Trouveurs, comme d’habitude, sont Jeff Cardey et Benjamin Steegen, deux musiciens capables de rendre la mélancolie optimiste avec des voix très chaleureuses et des guitares et mandolines tout aussi harmonieuses.
Ils rendent hommage à certains des meilleurs auteurs-compositeurs de l’Americana (Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley et bien d’autres) avec des interprétations intimes.
Comme Jeff joue aussi à Rawhide, il ne peut pas être présent ici.
Mais comme nous tenions tellement à faire découvrir Trouveurs au public, nous avons demandé à Benjamin s’il serait partant pour un duo occasionnel ? Et oui, il a accepté avec enthousiasme notre proposition de jouer avec Jörg Seifert, le professeur de banjo toujours patient et ô combien musical.
Jörg écrit depuis des années des tablatures pour le banjo à cinq cordes sur une grande variété de musiques. De Apache des Shadows à la polka suédoise de Zakarias Johanssen, rien ne lui pose problème.
Il prouve ainsi à quel point le banjo est un instrument polyvalent.
Nous nous réjouissons avec vous de ce duo occasionnel et espérons en silence que Trouveurs devienne parfois un trio…
NL// Trouveurs, dat zijn in gewone doen Jeff Cardey en Benjamin Steegen, twee muzikanten die met heel warme stemmen en dito gitaar en mandoline melancholie optimistisch kunnen laten klinken.
Zij brengen met intieme vertolkingen hommage aan enkele van de beste songwriters van Americana (Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley en vele anderen).
Omdat Jeff ook bij Rawhide speelt kan hij er hier niet bij zijn.
Maar omdat wij het publiek toch zo graag willen laten kennis maken met Trouveurs vroegen we aan Benjamin of hij een gelegenheidsduo zag zitten? En jawel hoor, heel enthousiast ging hij in op ons voorstel om samen te spelen met Jörg Seifert, de immer geduldige en o zo muzikale banjoleraar.
Jörg schrijft voor de vijfsnarige banjo al jaren tablaturen uit van de meest uiteenlopende muziek. Van Apache van de Shadows tot de Zweedse Zakarias Johanssen polka, hij draait er zijn hand niet voor om.
En bewijst daarmee ineens hoe veelzijdig de banjo is.
Wij kijken samen met jullie uit naar dit gelegenheidsduo en hopen in stilte dat Trouveurs af en toe een trio mag worden….

But since we are so keen to introduce the audience to Trouveurs anyway, we asked Benjamin if he was up for an occasional duo? And yes, he enthusiastically accepted our proposal to play together with Jörg Seifert, the ever-patient and oh-so-musical banjo teacher.
Jörg has been writing tablatures for the five-string banjo from a wide variety of music for years. From Apache by the Shadows to the Swedish Zakarias Johanssen polka, he has no trouble doing it.
And thus proves just how versatile the banjo is.
We look forward with you to this occasional duo and silently hope that Trouveurs may become a trio from time to time….
17h30 – Eleven Strings + Steve Louvat
NL// Eleven Strings dat zijn de vijf banjosnaren van Emmanuel Stessel met de zes gitaarsnaren van “De Pitte” (René Pittoors).
Ze brengen traditionals uit de Angelsaksische wereld, zowel gezongen als instrumentaal
Emmanuel speelt ongelooflijk goed clawhammer banjo en door de meesterlijke begeleiding van Pitte klinken hun ballades, reels en jigs alsof beiden geboren zijn ergens in Amerika of Ierland!
Speciaal voor de Derroll Adams Banjoree komt Steve Louvat meespelen.
Hij is ook virtuoos op banjo maar dan in de three-finger picking stijl en daarom hebben wij hem overtuigd om samen met zijn vriend Emmanuel een éénmalig programma te brengen waarin ze de veelzijdigheid van de banjo demonstreren.
Je kunt het vergelijken met een klassiek gitarist die gaat samenspelen met een flamencogitarist…

13h30 – 18h – Brussels American Roots Stringband
FR// Le groupe à cordes de Brussels American Roots Stringband (BARMS) se réunit une fois par semaine autour de musiques traditionnelles occidentales, issues des grandes vagues migratoires du XIXème siècle aux Etats-Unis, et propose principalement les vieilles musiques américaines, les musiques québécoises aux racines irlandaises ou Ulster Scots, des rythmiques spécifiques (Jigs, Reels, Brandis, Fiddle Tunes, …), et certains morceaux aux origines multiples, qui ont été préservées grâce au travail des collectionneurs de chants. Cette musique est le résultat est le résultat d’un phénomène appelé « créolisation » entre les Européens qui ont colonisé la région, les esclaves venus du continent africain et les quelques indigènes survivants. Ces rencontres ont donné naissance à une diversité musicale et à une richesse culturelle sans précédent. L’ensemble est ouvert à tous les musiciens – débutants ou avancés – d’instruments à cordes traditionnels américains (violon, mandoline, banjo (clawhammer), guitare et contrebasse) mais aussi d’autres pour d’autres instruments à cordes (ukulélé, violoncelle, etc.). Un concert de fin d’année sera préparé avec les étudiants. Les morceaux s’apprennent oralement (sans partitions). Le jeu, l’ambiance et le plaisir de jouer cette musique sont centraux. L’ensemble est coordonné par les multi-instrumentistes Lorcan Fahy (violon, mandoline) et Jérémie Fraboni (banjo clawhammer, guitare, chant).
NL // De strijkersgroep van Brussels American Roots Stringband (BARMS) komt eens per week samen rond traditionele westerse muziek, die is ontstaan uit de grote migratiegolven van de negentiende eeuw in de Verenigde Staten. en biedt voornamelijk oude Amerikaanse muziek aan, muziek uit Quebec met Ierse of Ulster Scots roots, specifieke ritmes (Jigs, Reels, Brandis, Fiddle Tunes, enz.), en bepaalde stukken met meerdere oorsprong, die dankzij de werkliedverzamelaars bewaard zijn gebleven. Deze muziek is het resultaat van een fenomeen dat ‘creolisering’ wordt genoemd tussen de Europeanen die de regio koloniseerden, de slaven die van het Afrikaanse continent kwamen en de weinige overgebleven inheemse volkeren. Deze ontmoetingen brachten een ongekende muzikale diversiteit en culturele rijkdom voort. Het ensemble staat open voor alle muzikanten – beginners of gevorderden – van traditionele Amerikaanse snaarinstrumenten (viool, mandoline, banjo (klauwhamer), gitaar en contrabas) maar ook voor andere snaarinstrumenten (ukelele, cello, etc.). Samen met de leerlingen wordt een eindejaarsconcert voorbereid. De stukken worden mondeling aangeleerd (zonder partituren). Het spel, de sfeer en het plezier van het spelen van deze muziek staan centraal. Het ensemble wordt gecoördineerd door multi-instrumentalisten Lorcan Fahy (viool, mandoline) en Jérémie Fraboni (klauwhamer banjo, gitaar, zang).
ENG// The Brussels American Roots Stringband (BARMS) string group meets once a week around traditional Western music, originating from the great migratory waves of the 19th century in the United States, and mainly offers old American music, Quebec music with Irish or Ulster Scots roots, specific rhythms (Jigs, Reels, Brandis, Fiddle Tunes, etc.), and certain pieces of multiple origins, which have been preserved thanks to the work of song collectors. This music is the result of a phenomenon called « creolisation » between the Europeans who colonized the region, the slaves who came from the African continent and the few surviving indigenous people. These meetings gave birth to unprecedented musical diversity and cultural richness. The ensemble is open to all musicians – beginners or advanced – of traditional American stringed instruments (violin, mandolin, banjo (clauwhammer), guitar and double bass) but also for other stringed instruments (ukulele , cello, etc.). An end-of-year concert will be prepared with the students. The pieces are learned orally (without scores). The game, the atmosphere and the pleasure of playing this music are central. The ensemble is coordinated by multi-instrumentalists Lorcan Fahy (violin, mandolin) and Jérémie Fraboni (clauwhammer banjo, guitar, vocals).

FR// On ne pouvait pas mettre en place notre festival sans inviter des anciens amis de Derroll Adams qui l’ont côtoyé, et d’autres qui lui vouent une profonde estime. Un podium libre accueillera des banjoïstes et musiciens divers désireux d’évoquer Derroll et de lui rendre hommage, qui se relayeront et se mêleront pour interpréter des chansons de son répertoire, ainsi que certaines particulièrement chères à son cœur. Parmi elles, des protest songs, chants de révolte contre l’oppression et toutes les injustices, de revendication et d’engagement en faveur de la liberté, la fraternité et l’égalité entre les peuples.
NL// We konden ons festival niet organiseren zonder vrienden van Derroll Adams uit te nodigen, muzikanten die ooit met hem werkten, en ook anderen die veel respect voor hem hebben. Tijdens een vrij podium verwelkomen we banjospelers en verschillende andere muzikanten die Derroll willen eren door om beurten zijn liedjes te brengen, maar ook enkele liederen zullen brengen die hem nauw aan het hart lagen. Dat zijn onder andere protest songs, liederen van opstand tegen onderdrukking en onrecht, van eisen en inzet voor vrijheid, broederschap en gelijkheid tussen mensen.
ENG// We couldn’t set up our festival without inviting former friends of Derroll Adams who worked alongside him, and others who hold him in deep esteem. A free podium will welcome banjoists and various musicians eager to evoke Derroll and pay tribute to him, who will take turns and mingle to perform songs from his repertoire, as well as some particularly dear to his heart. These include protest songs of revolt against oppression and injustice, of demand and commitment to freedom, fraternity and equality between peoples.

Depuis la fin des années 1960, à son arrivée en France, Steve Waring, ce musicien originaire des Etats-Unis, fait entendre sa voix, sa guitare, son banjo à travers de nombreux albums et des concerts à travers le monde. Steve Waring est naturellement associé au jeune public, un genre où il a déployé sa géniale inventivité notamment en compagnie d’Alain Gibert ! Il a aussi côtoyé son compatriote Derroll Adams et a aussi longtemps partagé la scène avec Graeme Allwright, liés par leur culture nord – américaine, le blues, le folksong. Par sa maîtrise de la guitare et du banjo, Steve Waring est reconnu par tous comme un instrumentiste hors-pair, qui aime la scène, qui sait raconter des histoires et hypnotiser un public. Il le dit : « J’aime « amener » la musique et mes histoires « vers » les gens qui m’écoutent. C’est aussi pourquoi j’aime les chansons dites pour les enfants, dans lesquelles je trouve un esprit direct, un rire simple, une poésie sans prétention. »

Hij heeft sindsdien zijn stem, zijn gitaar, zijn banjo laten horen via talloze albums en concerten over de hele wereld. Steve Waring wordt geassocieerd met een jong publiek, een genre waarin hij zijn briljante inventiviteit toont, met name in het gezelschap van Alain Gibert! Verbonden door hun Noord-Amerikaanse cultuur, blues en folksong, speelde hij ook met zijn landgenoot Derroll en deelde hij ook lange tijd het podium met Graeme Allwright. FR// Old Salt est un groupe d’Americana basé en Europe, qui joue de la musique originale et traditionnelle depuis 2015. Les membres internationaux actuels ont influencé Old Salt avec des sons des États-Unis, de la Belgique, de la France, de la Suède, de l’Écosse et du Chili. Ils ont tourné à travers l’Europe et sont invités sur de nombreuses scènes, des centres culturels aux grands festivals et aux festivals de vitrine comme Freiburger Kulturbörse. En 2017, Old Salt a reçu le prix « European World of Bluegrass ». Old Salt tire ses influences des rues de la Nouvelle-Orléans, en passant par les Appalaches, jusqu’au renouveau folklorique des États du Nord-Est, et saute l’étang pour trouver des sons de la vieille Europe, où le groupe réside actuellement. Ils mélangent avec succès la scène et la rue pour offrir un son folk avec du cran, du dynamisme, de la spontanéité, des arrangements serrés et une tonne de plaisir.

Ze hebben door heel Europa getoerd en zijn te gast op vele podia, van culturele centra tot grote festivals en showcasefestivals zoals Freiburger Kulturbörse. In 2017 won Old Salt de European World of Bluegrass award. Old Salt haalt zijn invloeden uit de straten van New Orleans, via Appalachia, naar de folk revival van de noordoostelijke staten, en slaat de vijver over om geluiden uit het oude Europa te vinden, waar de band momenteel verblijft. Ze mengen met succes podium en straat om een folksound te leveren met grit, drive, spontaniteit, strakke arrangementen en een hoop plezier.

Old Salt pulls its influences from the streets of New Orleans up through Appalachia to the folk revival of the North Eastern states and jumps the pond to find sounds from old Europe, where the band currently resides. They successfully mix stage and street to bring a folk sound with grit, dynamism, spontaneity, tight arrangements, and a ton of fun.
