About the event

Patrick Ferryn, passionné de musique, réalisateur de quelques documentaires sur la musique old time et folk, nous invite à jeter les bases d’un projet qui lui tient à cœur depuis des années : un festival de banjo en Belgique. Il nous parle de Derroll Adams – le banjoman aux doigts tatoués – et de rencontres en Flandre de musiciens et de mordus de banjo qui se réunissent à Essen au Come Around The Banjo, organisé de main de maître par deux amoureux fous de cet instrument, Arne et Joor Eekman

Nous décidons de rencontrer tout ce petit monde en août 2023, et invitons également Danny Adams (épouse de Derroll), Sophie Devaert (musicienne) et Line Eekman. Et sans hésiter nous mettons en place la collaboration.

En dehors de mettre en place ce projet et de notre amour pour cet instrument, il nous semblait important de mettre en avant la collaboration entre les deux communautés ; quoi de plus essentiel de montrer que la culture, qu’elle soit néerlandophone ou francophone, n’a pas de frontières… Oui, des Flamands et des Wallons, en dehors de tout clivage politique, peuvent encore monter des projets ensemble !

Patrick Ferryn, is muziekliefhebber en regisseur van een aantal documentaires over old-time en folkmuziek, en natuurlijk ook over Derroll Adams, de Amerikaans-Belgische banjospeler met zijn getatoeëerde vingers.

In Essen werd Patrick geïnspireerd door “Come Around The Banjo” een jaarlijks ontmoetingsweekend voor muzikanten en banjoliefhebbers georganiseerd door Arne Eekman en Joor Verhoeven.

In Augustus 2023 trok Patrick zijn stoute schoenen aan en contacteerde Arne en Joor met de vraag om samen te werken aan het eerste Belgische banjofestival. Met groot enthousiasme werd zijn uitnodiging aanvaard en samen met Danny Adams (de vrouw van Derroll), Sophie Devaert (muzikant), Line Eekman (zus van Arne), Fred Clautier ( voormalig cultuur coördinator van het cultureel centrum in Perwez) en zijn opvolger Renault Flémal, ontstond er een gepassioneerd team.

Naast het lanceren van dit project en onze liefde voor de banjo, vonden we het belangrijk om de samenwerking tussen de twee gemeenschappen in de verf te zetten. Wat is er nu essentiëler dan te laten zien dat cultuur, of ze nu Nederlandstalig of Franstalig is, geen grenzen kent… Ja, Vlamingen en Walen, buiten elke politieke scheidingslijn, kunnen nog steeds samenwerken!

Patrick Ferryn, music enthusiast and director of a number of documentaries on old-time and folk music, invites us to lay the foundations for a project that has been close to his heart for years: a banjo festival in Belgium. He tells us about Derroll Adams – the banjoman with the tattooed fingers – and about meetings in Flanders of musicians and banjo enthusiasts who come together in Essen for Come Around The Banjo, organised by two masterful banjo lovers, Arne and Joor Eekman.

We decided to meet up with them all August 2023, and also invited Danny Adams (Derroll’s wife), Sophie Devaert (musician) and Line Eekman. And without hesitation we set up the collaboration.

Apart from setting up this project and our love for this instrument, we felt it was important to highlight the collaboration between the two communities; what could be more essential than showing that culture, whether Dutch or French-speaking, knows no borders… Yes, Flemings and Walloons, outside any political divide, can still set up projects together!

About the banjo

Le banjo est l’instrument emblématique, populaire et familial par excellence aux Etats-Unis, comparable à l’accordéon chez nous. Au contraire de notre culture, le banjo est bien présent là-bas depuis déjà la fin du XIXème siècle, où il accompagnait souvent le fiddle (violon) ; le Folk Revival du début des années ’40 aux Etats-Unis a ensuite provoqué dans les Sixties un vif engouement pour cette musique (et notamment pour le banjo) dans nos pays d’Europe, qui est finalement peu à peu retombé en désuétude, pour connaître un nouvel essor auprès de nombreux jeunes musiciens au cours de ces dernières années.

De banjo is het emblematische, populaire familie-instrument bij uitstek in de Verenigde Staten, vergelijkbaar met de accordeon in ons land. In tegenstelling tot onze cultuur bestaat de banjo in de VS al sinds het einde van de 19e eeuw, vaak als begeleiding van de fiddle. De Folk Revival van de vroege jaren 1940 in de VS wakkerde in de jaren 1960 in Europa een rage voor deze muziek (en de banjo in het bijzonder) aan, die uiteindelijk in de vergetelheid raakte, om pas de laatste jaren door veel jonge muzikanten nieuw leven ingeblazen te worden.

The banjo is the emblematic, popular and family instrument par excellence in the United States, comparable to the accordion in our country. In contrast to our culture, the banjo has been around in the USA since the late 19th century, often accompanying the fiddle. The Folk Revival of the early 1940s in the USA sparked a craze for this music (and the banjo in particular) in Europe in the 1960s, which eventually faded into obscurity, only to be revived by many young musicians in recent years.

Pourquoi Derroll Adams Banjoree ?

Derroll Adams est né en 1925, à Portland, dans l’Etat de l’Oregon. Après de multiples errances et rencontres, son complice « Rambling » Jack Elliott le fait venir en Europe en 1957, et c’est en 1970 qu’il s’installe à Anvers avec son épouse Danny. Derroll a toujours suivi des chemins de traverse en marge de la célébrité et des médias, mais aux yeux de beaucoup Derroll Adams représente un modèle, ou en tout cas une référence de premier ordre pour bon nombre d’artistes reconnus et pas des moindres : Frank Hamilton, Arlo Guthrie, Alex Campbell, Ian Anderson et Maggie Holland, Dave Arthur, Long John Baldry, Ralf McTell, Rod Stewart, Anne Briggs, Derek Brimstone, Dave Evans, Vashti Bunyan, The Dubliners, Finbar Furey, Steve Waring, Paco Ibanez, Wizz Jones, Chris Simpson, Marianne Faithfull, Allan Taylor, Hans Theessink, Elliott Murphy, Roland Van Campenhout, Hannes Wader, Tucker Zimmerman, Hugues Aufray, etc. À l’instar de Donovan, plusieurs de ses amis lui ont consacré une chanson – et toutes sont de fort belle facture.

Derroll Adams est une grande figure de cette authentique musique old time et folk, qui influence encore bien des musiciens jeunes et moins jeunes. C’est sans conteste lui qui a contribué à faire connaître le banjo à 5 cordes dans notre pays.

En 2025, il aurait eu 100 ans.

Derroll Adams werd in 1925 geboren in Portland, Oregon. Na vele omzwervingen en ontmoetingen bracht zijn handlanger « Rambling » Jack Elliott hem in 1957 naar Europa en in 1970 vestigde hij zich met zijn vrouw Danny in Antwerpen. Derroll heeft zich altijd op de achtergrond gehouden, in de marge van de roem en de media, maar in de ogen van velen is Derroll Adams een model, of op zijn minst een eersteklas referentie, voor een aantal bekende artiesten, en niet de minsten onder hen: Frank Hamilton, Arlo Guthrie, Alex Campbell, Ian Anderson en Maggie Holland, Dave Arthur, Long John Baldry, Ralf McTell, Rod Stewart, Anne Briggs, Derek Brimstone, Dave Evans, Vashti Bunyan, The Dubliners, Finbar Furey, Steve Waring, Paco Ibanez, Wizz Jones, Chris Simpson, Marianne Faithfull, Allan Taylor, Hans Theessink, Elliott Murphy, Roland Van Campenhout, Hannes Wader, Tucker Zimmerman, Hugues Aufray en nog veel meer. Why Derroll Adams Banjoree?

Derroll Adams was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1925. After many wanderings and encounters, his accomplice « Rambling » Jack Elliott brought him to Europe in 1957, and it was in 1970 that he settled in Antwerp with his wife Danny. Derroll has always taken the low road, on the fringes of fame and the media, but in the eyes of many Derroll Adams represents a model, or at least a first-rate reference, for a number of well-known artists, and not the least of them: Frank Hamilton, Arlo Guthrie, Alex Campbell, Ian Anderson and Maggie Holland, Dave Arthur, Long John Baldry, Ralf McTell, Rod Stewart, Anne Briggs, Derek Brimstone, Dave Evans, Vashti Bunyan, The Dubliners, Finbar Furey, Steve Waring, Paco Ibanez, Wizz Jones, Chris Simpson, Marianne Faithfull, Allan Taylor, Hans Theessink, Elliott Murphy, Roland Van Campenhout, Hannes Wader, Tucker Zimmerman, Hugues Aufray and many more. Like Donovan, several of his friends have dedicated songs to him – and all of them are very fine.

Derroll Adams is a great figure of authentic old-time folk music, which still influences many musicians young and old. He was undoubtedly instrumental in introducing the 5-string banjo to our country.
